Rainbow Trout – Resident (Oncorhynchus mykiss) are native to the west coast of North America from southern Alaska to Durango, Mexico and inland as far as central Alberta in Canada and Idaho and Nevada in the U.S.
They have also been introduced throughout the Midwest and Eastern United States in rivers and streams that maintain a water temperature below 60 degrees.
The rainbow is covered with numerous prominent black spots and a horizontal streak.
In freshwater, they’re found in clean, cold streams and lakes.
A favorite target of fly anglers, rainbows can also be caught on small lures and bait with conventional tackle.
